Running for My Life
However, it was the snap that startled the panda. It immediately turned around, staring at me sharply. It made several noises in its nose and suddenly jumped at me ferociously. Because I had always kept alert at that time, I turned and ran for my life just in time. I thought of nothing but “ Run! ” at that moment. Although the paths were bumpy, with heavy snow covered, I ran as fast as I could. The panda did not hesitate to chase me. It closely followed me. After running about 80 metres, I dared to look back. Oh my god! It was not left behind at all. Instead, it was much closer to me! Pandas in the zoo were usually slow and clumsy. But their counterparts in the open field were so fast! Lots of branches cracked as it rushed down the mountains.
I knew from my experiences that I should run to places with lots of ripraps and dense trees, where the landscape was complicated. I reached a big rock. But the panda quickly followed me. It was now only three to four metres far away from me. I had no choice but to jump into a hole below the rock. Fortunately, there were lots of deadwood and leaves at the bottom of the hole, together with heavy snow. Thus I did not get hurt at all. I set my heart at rest. But just as I looked up, I found the panda also looking down at me from that rock! Then it held its head and rolled itself down the slope of the big rock. After that it rushed at me again! I had to run to the woods in front of me. I ran in the route of “ S ” , but failed to get rid of the animal. At last, I had to get out of the woods and headed for the bamboo forest.
Those bamboos were as tall as my shoulders. I suddenly came up with an idea. I bent down and hid myself in the dense bamboos. I rushed like this for a while. Looking back, I saw no panda any more. But I still did not dare to stop. Ten minutes later, I finally slowed down and I was sure that I had got rid of the wild animal. It was not until then did I realize that I had lost contact with my accompanier.
I began to feel exhausted. My heart beat like drums. I was all soaked with snow and sweat and found walking much more difficult. Fortunately, the facilities I took with me were all right, except broken UV lenses and wet lenses. The mountains were very high, so the air pressure was very low and oxygen was scarce. Because of that, I dared not to sit down for a rest, not to mention lying down.
